In Defense of (a Healthy) Ego

For far too long in my life, my SELF has felt suppressed, minimized, belittled, ignored, unacknowledged, unloved, unseen. Growing up, there were so many times my feelings and needs were disregarded by those around me that over time, I lost a sense of them myself.

Our wants, needs, feelings, desires, along with all the unique aspects of our personalities are what comprise a person, a "self." And we need OURSELVES in this life.

It's taken me until now, but I've finally learned that anyone who makes you feel like you do not deserve a SELF must go.

They are not someone to have close in my life.

If they are not trying to see me for me. Then no.

If they disregard my needs. Then no.

If they do not respect me. Then no.

If they abuse me. Then HELL NO.

If they neglect me. Then no.

If they belittle me or my dreams. Then no.

If they do not support me in a healthy way. Then no.

IT IS OK TO BE “SELF”ISH.

IT IS OK — IT IS NECESSARY — TO HAVE A SELF.

And most of all... to give that precious SELF as much love and care as you possibly can.
