The Flowers Came With a Price Tag

The flowers came with a price tag

on our wedding day.

Shouldered to bear your burdens and mine

instead of children.

Me, a stick figure companion

made in the image of your distortions.

We never made it that far.

Once, we joked about the stars and made them ours,

renaming them to our liking.

Yet, with this decoder ring I thee—

(We never made it that far.)

Finally, I realize not a thing can be altered

in heaven or between us.
